The Chairman of the Directors of the Department of State Security (DSS) for the North-East, Sani Bakori, has called for enhanced collaborative efforts to tackle the region’s persistent security challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 17th conference of State Directors of DSS on Wednesday in Bauchi, Bakori emphasised the critical need for strategic partnerships to address issues such as terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, communal conflicts, and the effects of climate change.

Bakori, who is also the Gombe State Director of DSS, highlighted the profound impact of these security threats on the region, which has led to the loss of lives, the displacement of millions of people and a significant disruption in social cohesion and development.

He stressed that security must go beyond the mere absence of violence, creating an environment where families can thrive, children are safe, and education can be pursued without fear.

The meeting aimed to reinforce community resilience and policing, strengthen collaboration with stakeholders, and focus on addressing the root causes of insecurity.

Bakori urged participants to commit to functional strategies that can make a real difference in the lives of those affected.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, echoed Bakori’s sentiments, underscoring the importance of intelligence gathering in maintaining peace and stability.

He pointed out that addressing fundamental issues like poverty, unemployment, and social discontent is essential to ensuring lasting peace in the region.

Nafiu Bello, the DSS Director in Bauchi State, praised Governor Mohammed’s administration for its partnership with the service and pledged continued commitment to fulfilling their duties in maintaining security.
