The National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) has stressed the need for the federal government to focus attention on Technical Colleges and Trade Centres to train our youths to be self -employed.
NAAT President Comrade Sani Suleiman stated this at the opening session of the 3rd delegates’ conference of the association held recently in Abuja.
Comrade Suleiman also called for the upgrade of facilities and infrastructures in Polytechnic and Colleges of Education across the country even as he said that government should ensure that Needs Assessment Committees for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education commence works urgently to address the infrastructural decay in these institutions.
He said that the struggle to have Nigerian Universities revitalized through intervention fund initiated by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has not yielded the desired result because the federal government is not delivering on its promise in this area.
He said, “NAAT is concerned that the federal government is not delivering on its promises on the intervention fund. The federal government agreed to provide funds for the revitalization of the University System to the tune of 1.3 trillion naira for a period of six years. But unfortunately, only 200 billion for 2013 was released and disbursed. The implementation committee is yet to receive funds for 2014 and 2015 totalling 440 billion naira.”
He urged the federal government to as a matter of urgent national interest release the 2014 and 2015 funds to Implementation Monitoring Committee for immediate disbursement to Nigerian public universities while calling on the government to ensure the sustainability of the intervention fund.
Earlier, Acting President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Comrade Peters Adeyemi urged the federal government to ensure that the 2016 budget lay the foundation for future successes in all sectors of the nation.
He said that improved funding for the education sector would   lay a solid foundation for technological advancement.
“We therefore envisage that under this administration, genuine efforts will be channeled towards promoting science and technology at all levels of our educational system,” he said.
