As part of efforts in combating the scourge of gender-based violence in the country, a non-governmental organisation focused on improving health outcomes and advocating for the rights of women and girls, Daurama Foundation, has unveiled Voices Within, a powerful short film that sheds light on domestic and gender-based violence.

Produced by Take 7 Media and directed by Bem Pever, with screenplay by Mahdi Eldaw and Emil Garuba, the film forms a key part of initiatives for the annual 16 Days of Activism, a global campaign to end violence against women and girls.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.

The campaign was started by activists at the inauguration of the Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991.

It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

Founder of Daurama Foundation, Dr. Samira Buhari, in a statement on Wednesday, explained that the movie tells the story of a young girl who witnesses a tragic cycle of abuse at home and turns to writing as an escape.

According to Buhari, through her storytelling, the young girl finds the strength to express her pain and resilience while dreaming of a safer world.

“Her story also unveils her mother’s plight—a survivor of abuse who, due to a childhood disability, is unable to defend herself physically”, the statement said.

Buhari explained that the film’s narrative amplifies the voices of those often unheard, encouraging audiences to stand in solidarity against violence.

“The release of Voices Within marks an important milestone in our mission to not only raise awareness but also inspire action. We invite the public, stakeholders, and community members to attend this premiere, be moved by the story, and join us in saying ‘no more’ to gender-based violence,” the statement added.

The cast features a talented ensemble of Nigerian actors, with performances by Grace Daudu, Mbasity Jesse, Tolu Asanu, Franca Igwe, Lanzy Janpak, Hoomsuk Alex Jibrin, Austin Mangs, and Senenge Abela. Dr. Samira Buhari, Executive Producer and Chair of Daurama Foundation.

She noted that the movie which would premier at Silver Bird Cinema, Jabi Lake Mall, Abuja, on November 30, 2024, embodies the foundation’s commitment to empowering women and fostering communities that advocate against violence.

“For those committed to creating a safer and more inclusive world, Voices Within is a call to action. This premiere promises to be a transformative event that unites communities in the fight against domestic violence and gender-based violence”, the organisation added.
