A renowned sports commentator and broadcaster, Kelechi Onwudiwe, has emerged as the chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT chapter after a hotly contested election.

Onwudiwe who works with Beats FM defeated closest challenger, Tolu Oguntimehin of ITV with 77 votes against 68 votes for the other broadcaster. 

The election which was held yesterday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja saw over 150 sports writers converging to elect the new leadership. 

It will be noted that the elections into the positions of Chairman and Treasurer of the assiciation were inconclusive during the first ballots in April leading to yesterday’s rerun.

In the other election, Jane Frances Nweze edged Taefeek Lawal to the position of Treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Onwudiwe said he was prepared to lead the Association to greater heights and unite a fractured group.

“I am glad to win this election and I am prepared to lead our great association to greater heights. We used to be respected and its my desire to bring back our lost glory. I will work with my fellow contestants and carry everyone along in this quest for greater SWAN. 

“The new EXCO will do all we can to unite the Association. Most importantly ensure the welfare and growth of our members remain at the top priority. We have lost a lot in the past but we will gain a lot as well, as we begin to reposition SWAN,” he said.

Other EXCO members are Okoye Victor who emerged as the vice Chairman, Jane Nweze, treasurer, Nìyí Busari, financial Secretary while Samuel Ahmadu emerged as Secretary.  

Joan Iwuchukwu and Friday Joshua emerged as welfare Secretary and assistant secretary respectively.
