BUK, FUD lecturers join protest against half salaries

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from Bayero University Kano (BUK) and Federal University Dutse (FUD) have joined the peaceful protest organised by the union against the pro rata October Salary payment.

ASUU had last month called off its eight-month-old strike following a Court of Appeal order and intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.

However, the union members got half-salaries which the government called pro-rata payment for the number of days worked.

The union said it was an attempt to turn lecturers into casual workers.

The BUK branch chairman, Haruna Musa, said they suspended their strike in respect to the court order and appeals by parents and other stakeholders.

“But it appears that the government is not ready. It is worth noting that the pro rata payment of salaries is a contravention of all known rules of engagement in any contract of employment for academics the world over. So this is a threat to treat university lecturers as casual workers,” he said.

On his part, the FUD branch chairman, Dr Bashir Yusuf, said the action of the federal government was against all conventional laws; international labour laws, and civil service rules.
