‘Counsellors needed in schools to address moral decadence’

Members of the Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria (APROCON) have highlighted the need for massive deployment of professional counsellors at all levels of the educational system to address moral decadence among students.
APROCON national president, Prof. Ekundayo Ocholi, who made this known in a communique yesterday, after the 6th Annual International Conference of the association, tasked government and school proprietors on engagement of professional counsellors in schools.
He decried the lack of professional counsellors in many schools.
The association also urged the National Assembly to conclude the legislative process on the bill, which has now reached an advanced stage.

The bill, when passed and assented to, will regulate the helping relationships and mental health concerns in school and non-school settings.
The body also called for the engagement of counsellors in non-school settings, especially in critical governmental agencies such as the National Orientation Agency (NOA), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) correctional centres and other humanitarian sectors such as the IDP camps.
He said the theme for next year’s conference is “Counselling for Value Re-Orientation” billed to be held in Keffi, Nasarawa State.
