The Federal Government has increased funding for basic education with a N3.5 billion grant for state governments to implement infrastructural projects.
The announcement was made during a 5-day financial training for SUBEB Chairmen and Board Secretaries in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.
The grant, announced by UBEC Executive Secretary Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, represents a significant increase from the previous N1.3 billion annual allocation.
According to him, the funding boost comes from the 2% consolidated revenue fund allocated to support basic education in Nigeria, following the passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bill.

He added that State governments are required to provide an equivalent amount as counterpart funding to access the grant.
Dr. Bobboyi urged states to utilize the grant effectively, noting that the increased funding can make a significant impact when combined with state contributions. He also encouraged states to access the remaining N1.395 billion from the 2023 Matching Grant.
The UBEC Executive Secretary also highlighted the challenges in the basic education sector, including the need to address out-of-school children.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration between state governments and the commission to achieve sustainable development goals.
