Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Country Director Plan International, Mr Usie Charles Emmamuzou, has blamed lack of planning and short-sightedness as reasons why Nigerian youths cannot become president in Nigeria anytime soon. 

He said this in Abuja at a summit organised by the Africado Foundation to commemorate the International Youth Day (IYD) with the theme ‘Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’.

According to Emmamuzou, young persons in the country were too fixated on the office of the president, when there are other offices that can be contested for, which they can win and make impacts.

He lamented that old leaders would continue to lead the nation even after President Muhammadu Buhari, unless the youth change their attitude towards governance and development.

“If you look at rich and prosperous countries, you’ll know that they went through a process and a phase, many young people in my opinion do not want to pay that price. There is therefore the need for youth to be intentional in the area of politics and governance by joining political parties. They must also learn to undergo tutelage and mentorship,” he said.
