Head gear, ‘gele’, for special occasions is an age long fashion statement in Nigeria, especially among Yoruba and Igbo women, for cultural and traditional ceremonies. It has however become a trend all over in today’s fashion world.
Gele makes the woman elegantly beautiful if worn to complement outfits such as, “iro and buba”, skirt and blouse, free flowing and short gowns among others. Some fashionistas even tie gele while wearing trousers and beautiful ankara tops.
Though loved by a great percentage of women, not many know the steps in tying gele thereby making those that venture into the business to make fortunes, especially during special occasions like wedding, coronation, burial rights and so on.
To some, it is stressful tying gele all by one’s self but it is a delight to those individuals that knows it.
But the ‘auto-gele’, is the new innovative style of head gears that have taken over the fashion world.
A fashion designer, Bukola Davies, said the new style of gele is very creative and makes traditional dressing convenient. “You don’t have to spend hours tying gele because this already made headgear could be tied within few minutes thus eliminating the stress women used to go through before tying a perfectly normal headgear.”
She said many people have embraced it for its convenience, adding that it is as beautiful as though you tied it yourself and comes in different style.
Madam Grace who said she had many gele materials at home because she always got them along with ‘aso ebi’ (occasional uniform), explained that she was worried about her wardrobe until the new creative gele came to her rescue.
“I have made some of them into auto-gele and that is why am flaunting. I used to take them to the market each time I want to wear one and they charge between N300 and N500 depending in the style. But this version is the best because, it is simple, easy to wear and also beautiful,” the gele enthusiast said.
