NGO empowers women, youths in Abuja

A non-governmental organisation, Relate International Foundation, has empowered 25 widows and over 50 young people with cash, books and clothing as part of its social responsibility programme.

The coordinator and founder of the organisation, Barr Ebuk Ekpo, made the presentation at the annual Relate Christmas Carol and empowerment programme held in Abuja recently.

“These are widows and fatherless children. We have discovered that some of the children are dropping out of school. Relate Foundation is for transformation, empowering and it’s for mentoring. So we try to bring these children up to know that there is a future and they are loved.  It is good to know that there is a welfare programme even though the government does not have such particularly for widows and the fatherless in the country.

“We gave scholarship to three of their children in the university, gave books and gifts to over 40 in primary and secondary schools and cash to 25 widows to help boost their businesses,” Barr Ekpo said.

Chairperson of the event, Hon. Dr Ngozi Etolue, said they brought the people from different parts of Abuja to be empowered and also celebrate Christmas.

One of the widows, Funmi David, said the gifts and scholarship for her son is a great relief.

“I and my family are really grateful for this. We got some cash gift to boost my business and my son is one of those who got scholarship. He is an Accountancy student at UNIBEN. I am grateful to Relate Foundation,” she said.
