The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), last Tuesday frowned at the use of disused tyres and other inflammable materials to roast meat for human consumption, saying research had proved that tyres contain highly toxic materials that are risky to humans. 
The director in charge of Agriculture Services in the FCTA Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Alhaji Isa Ademoh, gave the warning during the inauguration of the newly elected executive of the Garki Butchers Association in Abuja. 
He said the Agriculture Secretariat had commenced a public awareness campaign to sensitise FCT residents to be cautious and avoid buying meat roasted with flames made from tyres. 
Ademoh announced that officials of the Animal Services Division had been authorised to step up monitoring of abattoirs in order to stop the unwholesome practice. 
He assured butchers that government would tackle the challenges in abattoirs, including water shortage. 
He charged the new executive of the association to change the negative perception associated with butchers as disorderly people, adding that they must live responsibly. 
Earlier in his remarks, chairman of the Garki Butchers Association, Mallam Hassan Maijanman, called on the FCTA to support the association in its efforts at producing healthy meat for public consumption.
Maijanman stressed the need for the FCTA to provide a standard abattoir, refrigerator vans and meat shops in designated areas across the territory.
He pledged the association’s commitment to keep the abattoirs clean.
