Residents of Karu in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the FCT are groaning over water scarcity.

 City & Crime gathered that the worst affected areas are neighbouring Zhimi and Peshe villages; Anguwar Hausawa, Anguwar Tiv, Shebwo village and Mwan-Kpan village.

A resident of Zhimi, Mr Bamaiyi Giwa, said residents of Karu and some neighbouring villages had been facing the problem of water scarcity for over two months.

 He said many houses that were connected to water pipes from the water board no longer had tap water, adding that they had resorted to buying water from vendors at exorbitant rates.

 He further said, “In fact, we visited the water board office here in Karu more than three times; where they complained that some water pipes had broken down for two months now.”

He noted that residents always woke up at about 3am in search of water from the few available commercial boreholes, adding that a truck of water which contained 10 jerry cans which sold for N400 was now about N1, 300.

 Another resident, Mrs Margareth Jonathan, said, “My fear is that people should not be infected with water-borne diseases, especially as we are in the dry season, where we need to be careful with the kind of water we drink.”

She, therefore, appealed for urgent intervention of the FCT water board.
