This assurance was given during a meeting with members of the committee at its office along Abdullahi Fodiyo Road, Sokoto yesterday.
Chairman of the task force, Squadron Leader Aminu Bala Sokoto (retired), said the meeting became necessary in view of the alarming rate of indiscriminate placement of posters and billboards in the metropolis.
He said the action negated the environmental law of the state, adding that if allowed to continue, it would degenerate into a poster war that could lead to destructions and serious violence.
“We are living witnesses to what happened before our earlier intervention when some of your supporters engaged themselves in a poster war. As a result, a lot of them sustained injuries, and so many property, especially campaign offices were destroyed. This is one of the reasons why we want to embark on this exercise. There is the need to, at least, bring sanity to our environment and save our youths,” he said
He assured the parties of equal treatment, saying no offender would be spared irrespective of party affiliation.
“We did it in the past and received a lot of commendation from some of you, including the secretary of the PDP. If we can remove the posters and billboards of the governor, I don’t think we can spare anybody,” he added.
While seeking for the cooperation of the parties, Sokoto said the exercise was not about the PDP or APC, but about how to make people appreciate the beauty of Sokoto State.
He advised the parties to follow the laid down procedures on the erection and placement of campaign billboards and posters in the state.
In their separate responses, the parties agreed to support the committee in carrying out the exercise, but on the condition that it would not spare any party that violates the law.
