The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) has stated that it approved the construction of corner shops on the fences of some selected schools in the state to improve the security situation around the schools.

Daily Trust Saturday had reported how parts of some schools’ lands (Maikwatashi and Kwakwaci) were recently allocated for construction of corner shops while the schools’ buildings remain dilapidated.

But the KNUPDA’s Managing Director, Suleiman Ahmed Abdulwahab, said the lands were not sold out to any individual and that the shops were constructed with the permission of the schools authorities, the state government and the Kano State House of Assembly.

Speaking during a tour by the Committee of Lands of the Kano State House of Assembly to some of the schools where the corner shops are being constructed, the MD said the Parent Teachers Associations (PTA), Old Boys Associations, and other stakeholders requested the construction of the shops to enable the schools generate income and enhance security.

He said they had already embarked on the renovation of, at least, 22 secondary schools in the state, adding that the corner shops are constructed under a Public-Private-Partnership agreement (PPP).
