Over 300 women have been given food stuffs, clothes and farming implements by the Women Solidarity Initiatives for Development (WOSID).
While giving the items to the women, who are mainly farmers yesterday in Abuja, WOSID’s President, Chief Mrs Marian Olushola Nishile, said the NGO had been empowering the women with entrepreneurship skills to help them make profits from farming.
“Our aim is to empower and help the rural women because we have discovered that they are the real farmers. They farm year-in-year-out but the entrepreneurship aspect they do not know. They did not know how to make money out of the farming. So WOSID came in and taught them how to process and package their farm produce and send them abroad.
“We have empowered them and given them hectares of land to farm in Nasarawa State. So they farm, we teach them to process it and we package it and send them out for export. The women get 30 percent from the proceeds that come from exporting the food items.” Nishile said.
The President of WOSID said though they have over 1000 women farmers across 18 states, 300 of the women have been given food items, herbicide, sprayers to help them continue in farming next year.
One of the women , Patricia Dennis, from Mararaba Panda in Nasarawa State, said WOSID had given them money and taught them how to make money from farming.
“Before now, we did not have money to farm, WOSID gave us money to farm. We farm, we buy herbicide and they teach us how to process the crops and make more money. Today, they have given us more food items and clothing to celebrate Christmas with our children and family. We are very happy and grateful to WOSID, ‘ she said.
