An improvised explosive device (IED) concealed beneath a vehicle exploded on Monday in Oke Mushin area of Lagos, injuring one person.
The explosion occurred at about 6 am at 22 Wey Street, Oke Mushin, triggering panic among residents and traders.
Witnesses said the victim, who had parked his Toyota Sienna overnight, started the vehicle’s engine when the device exploded on the passenger side, causing extensive damage to the vehicle and leaving him with minor injury.
The incident prompted a swift response from security agencies, including operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit and senior police officers led by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai.
Speaking at the scene, Fatai confirmed that preliminary investigations showed the explosive device had been planted underneath the vehicle and detonated shortly after the ignition was turned on.
He said the victim was rushed to a hospital where he was receiving treatment, while investigators were reviewing his statement as part of efforts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack.
According to the police commissioner, EOD experts conducted a thorough sweep of the area and recovered remnants of the explosive device for forensic analysis.
He assured residents that the scene had been certified safe and urged them to remain calm and go about their normal activities without fear.
The Baale of Oke Mushin, Chief Tajudeen Lasisi Farunbi, said he received a distress call shortly after the blast and immediately alerted the police.
Farunbi said he advised residents not to approach the damaged vehicle until security operatives arrived and secured the scene.
Police have launched a full investigation to determine those responsible for planting the IED and the motive behind the attack.
