Gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked Edede and Ojapata communities in Oganenigu Ward of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing one person and injuring two others.
Residents said the attackers invaded the communities at about 3.30pm on Tuesday, shooting sporadically. A resident, Nasiru Ulayi, was reported killed in the attack. Several houses were reportedly razed, forcing residents to flee for safety.
“The community has been deserted. Several houses were set ablaze during the attack which started around 3.30pm. One Nasiru Ulayi was brutally murdered,” said Alewo, a resident who fled to a neighbouring community.
Sources indicated that the casualty figure might be higher, as some fleeing residents have reported missing relatives.
In a related development, gunmen also ambushed two local vigilantes in Onitcha-Igo community in Ofu Local Government Area.
The vigilantes were on routine patrol when they ran into the ambush. Both sustained gunshot injuries but managed to escape.
“They were rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja. One of them is currently undergoing surgery due to the severity of his injuries,” said Mamudu, a member of the vigilante group.
Efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, Afusat Oyiza Saliu, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls or messages as of the time of filing this report.
