1 killed, another injured over cashew nuts in Kwara

A man identified as Shina has been shot dead, while another sustained gunshot injuries, during a violent attack linked to a cashew harvesting dispute in the Erin-Ile community of Kwara State.

The incident occurred on February 27, 2026, when the victims went to harvest cashew nuts at a plantation in the area.

The deceased’s elder brother, Abdulsalam Lukman of Atere’s compound, Erin-Ile, said Shina had gone to the plantation with one Toheeb Suleiman to harvest cashew nuts when they were allegedly ambushed.

The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, confirmed the incident during a briefing in Ilorin over the weekend.

He identified the suspect as Noah Olorunyomi of Oluawo’s compound.

He said Olorunyomi allegedly shot Shina with a locally made Dane gun, killing him on the spot.

“Further findings by the police revealed that the same suspect had earlier carried out another shooting attack in the community on the same day,” the CP stated.

“One Jubril reported at the police station that his son, Idris, and another person had gone to a nearby river to bathe when the suspect allegedly ambushed them and shot Idris in the abdomen,” Ojo added.

According to the commissioner, the second victim survived the attack and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

Speaking on the motive, Ojo said, “When we asked him why he did it after his arrest, he said it was because they were picking his cashew nuts and that he is the owner of the farm.”

He said a Dane gun believed to have been used in the attacks has been recovered, adding that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
