A young man was killed at a popular mall on Ring Road in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Sunday night when police raided the area to arrest suspected internet fraudsters.
Our correspondent learnt that the youths were taking Indian hemp when police arrived the mall, and that while being questioned by the police one of them attempted to escape.
A witnesses told Daily Trust that in the attempt to escape, a police officer shot him in his stomach and he died instantly.
The source who declined to mention his name said, “I was there live. The Yahoo boys were taking Indian hemp when the police arrived. I guess the young man was afraid of being caught with marijuana and he attempted to escape. One of the policemen shot him in the stomach and he died and his corpse was taken away.”
When contacted, the police spokesman in the state, Adewale Osifeso, said it was not the police that shot the youth.
He explained that the crisis was between two factions of a cult group, and that the police were investigating the matter and would give comprehensive detail when completed.
