One person lost his life after a truck conveying soft drinks crashed at the Tipper Garage junction along the Dutse-Bwari highway in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Abuja Metro learnt that the incident occurred around 8pm on Tuesday when the trailer, traveling from the Usuma Dam axis, reportedly suffered a brake failure. This led to it striking a cooking gas tanker at the junction before overturning.
Ose Idasho, Chairman of the Mines Transport and Workers Association in the area, spoke to Abuja Metro regarding the incident. He stated that the trailer rolled over a car, resulting in the death of one person who was later pulled from beneath the vehicles.
Idasho explained that the gas tanker was attempting to make a U-turn at the junction to enter a nearby Shafa filling station when it was struck near its front section. While the tanker sustained partial damage and was eventually driven into the filling station, workers spent much of the night offloading crates of drinks from the overturned trailer to clear the road.
It was gathered that it took officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) several hours to provide a towing machine, eventually succeeding in lifting the trailer off the road around midnight.
Abuja Metro reports that the Tipper Garage junction has been the site of numerous accidents involving loss of life and property damage. These incidents are largely attributed to truck brake failures caused by the area’s steeply sloping terrain.
Many stakeholders believe these accidents often involve drivers who are strangers to the area and unfamiliar with the terrain. They have suggested installing prominent traffic cautionary signs several kilometers ahead of the junction from the Bwari axis and, ultimately, the construction of a flyover bridge to manage the dangerous intersection.
