At least one person was reportedly killed in the early hours of Tuesday when suspected armed attackers launched a fresh assault on Ondo community in Ugboju District of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The latest incident occurred barely 48 hours after 18 people were reportedly killed in Otukpo-Nobi community, also in Otukpo LGA.

Residents said the attackers stormed the community at about 5 a.m., shooting sporadically. They said one person was killed, while another sustained serious injuries.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said many people fled their homes as the attack triggered panic across the community.

The Chairman of Otukpo LGA, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the incident, saying the attack was swiftly repelled by a combined team of security operatives, but not before one resident lost his life.

He added that security personnel had launched a manhunt for the attackers.

“There is crisis in Ondo, but it is not severe. The attack was repelled after the loss of one indigene. Combined security operatives are combing the forest in search of the bandits. The situation is now calm because the security agencies responded promptly,” Ogiri said.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Udeme Edet, said she had yet to receive any report on the incident.
