One person was reportedly shot dead on Tuesday by a police officer attached to Idiogungu, Agodi-gate area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, while many residents of the area were injured during a clash between the police and Okada (motorcycle) riders in the area.

Eyewitnesses told EkoTrust that the fracas started when a police officer allegedly demanded N50 bribe from an Okada man but the rider refused to oblige.

The source said the rider was shot and killed by the policeman during the argument.

It was learnt that some members of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria (ACCOMORAN) attempted to attack the police officer.

An witness, Ogunjobi Seun, told Eko Trust that after the bike man was shot, the police officers in the area in an attempt to whisk the officer away in an armoured vehicle collided with a tricycle, injuring four passengers in the process.

The mob set the Idiogungu police station ablaze, forcing many residents to scamper for safety as business activities within the area were paralysed.

Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, SP Gbenga Fadeyi, said none of the officers fired any shot, alleging that it was officers of the correctional service that fired a gun.

“The truth is that there was a clash between officers of the correctional service and bike men stationed at Agodi gate, upon receipt of this information, police men as well as other security agencies moved to the scene to ensure there’s no breakdown of law and order that could lead to coordinated attack on the prison facility,” he said.
