The leader of a four-man armed robbery gang was yesterday shot dead during a robbery operation at Ubiaja in Esan South East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Daily Trust gathered that three other members of the gang were arrested by a combined team of the police and the local vigilante in the area.

It was learnt that the four-man gang, in the early hours of Sunday, raided Ogbeide Medical Centre in Ubiaja, where they robbed the staff and relations of patients, and that while the robbery operation was going on, someone put a distress call to security agents and members of the Ubiaja Vigilante Group.

It was further gathered that the robbers on sighting the security personnel, engaged them in a gun battle, leading to the death of the gang leader identified as Osagie.

It was also learnt that one of the arrested suspects is an ex-convict who was released from a correctional centre a few months ago.

The state police spokesman, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, could not be reached for comment as calls put across to him were not answered.
