Over 10,000 girls drawn from secondary school in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are participating in the national stage of 2016 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad for Girls (PAMO-G).
The competition, which was initiated by the African Mathematical Union (AMU), was meant to select students to represent the country in next year’s competition and elicit and sustain the interest of girls in maths, a statement from the National Mathematical Centre said.
The President AMU and Director/Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Adewale Solarin, said in the statement that winners in each state would be crowned mathematics queens while the African Queen would subsequently emerge at the continental championship.
