The police in Ekiti State have arraigned 10 people at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti over alleged unlawful possession and smoking of Indian hemp.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court that the defendants was found with Indian hemp on September 9 at about 5 am at Ijadu, Ado-Ekiti.

Inspector Oriyomi said that on the same date and in the same place, they conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by smoking and causing public unrest.

The prosecutor added that the offence is contrary to and punishable under Sections 421 and 181(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State 2021 and Section 5 of the Indian hemp Act LFN 2004.

Counsel for the defendants, Barrister O. G. Abiola, urged the court to grant his clients’ bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Abayomi Adeosun, granted each of the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until October 6, for hearing.
