Old students of St Anthony Secondary School, Ilorin, in collaboration with the Kwara State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, have trained 100 teachers in the state.

The alumni, who noted that they discovered from the state Ministry of Education that teachers in public schools in the state had not undergone refresher courses in the last 15 years, decided to give back to their alma mater through the training.

One of the facilitators, Folasade Aransiola said: “The 1997 set decided to give this training because from our findings from the Ministry of Education, we realized that teachers in government schools in Kwara State have not obtained any training in the last 15 years.”

She noted that the teachers needed proper training on the 21st century model of teaching to be able to teach the 21st century students, saying, “it is for us to be able to bridge the gap between the mode of teaching that they had and the 21st century teaching.

“In total, we are training 52 from the senior secondary and 48 from the junior secondary schools. We hope to make this training a continuous thing, but it will be dependent on the feedback we receive from those that have been trained.”

Another facilitator, Morgan Onegbe said if the teachers are not well-equipped and trained, that  will affect students’ performance. “We are trying to make them go back to the way we were taught and we are making headway in our various endeavours.”

“After this, we will come back to the students to know what we can do to ensure competitiveness among them and enhance their learning capability. We don’t want the name of the school to go into oblivion. It has given us a lot,” he said.

The Vice Principal (Administration) Senior Secondary School, Yemisi Kuranga commended the students for the gesture.
