The Lagos State Government has announced plans to roll out a comprehensive health and safety programme targeting professional drivers across the state, with no fewer than 10,000 commercial drivers expected to benefit from the initiative.

The programme, aimed at improving road safety and reducing traffic-related accidents, is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance driver fitness, alertness, and overall well-being while protecting lives and property on Lagos roads.

According to the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, the exercise will run for four days, from Monday, February 9 to Thursday, February 12, 2026, across selected locations in the state.

Adekoya explained that the initiative is designed to address occupational health and safety challenges faced by professional drivers—particularly truck and articulated vehicle operators—who play a critical role in sustaining Lagos State’s economy and logistics ecosystem.

The programme will be implemented at four strategic locations: Iyana Iba Park, Obalende Park, Lekki Free Trade Zone Park, and Lilly Pond Bonded Terminal in Apapa.

He disclosed that beneficiaries will receive free eye screenings, medical consultations, corrective lenses, as well as substance abuse awareness and screening services, all aimed at promoting responsible driving and improving overall road safety.

“The objective is to ensure that every driver leaving seaports, depots, and motor parks across Lagos State is physically fit, mentally alert, and visually capable of navigating the roads safely,” Adekoya said.

The Lagos State Government has also called on transport owners, associations, and unions to support the successful implementation of the programme by sensitising and mobilising their members to participate, while facilitating access to major parks and depots for the exercise.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety measures and improving transport operations in the state through proactive, preventive initiatives.
