Former Head of State, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State as well as a medical expert, Dr Oseigwe Evaristus, have raised alarm over increasing cases of cancer in Nigeria despite efforts to contain it.
 Dr Oseigwe Evaristus, who delivered a paper on during the official foundation stone laying ceremony of Asi Ukpo Oncology Centre in Calabar, said about 100,000 fresh cases of cancer plague Nigerians every year.
He attributed the increase to late presentation of cancer cases by patients to the hospitals for treatment, saying Nigerians were not fond of detecting ailments immediately or treating such early enough.
Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar,  who was special guest of honour called on FG to establish more cancer control and treatment centres across the country to reduce medical tourism abroad.
  Brig. Gen. Anthony Ukpo (rtd) who is the founder and Chairman of Asi Ukpo Diagnostic and Medical Centre Calabar, said healthcare should not necessarily be managed by doctors alone, and that he was challenged to establish it when he lost two siblings to cancer.
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State applauded Ukpo for investing in the Oncology Centre.
