The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has inspected its ongoing police station construction projects, pledging its commitment to timely completion.
Adamu Gwary, Director of the FCT Department of Security Services, conducted a tour of the projects with journalists on Thursday.
He stated that 11 out of the 12 police stations across the six area councils are nearing completion.
He explained that the project was conceived following the FCT Minister’s town hall meeting with stakeholders in 2023.
According to Gwary, construction began in September 2024 after approval by the FCT Executive Committee.
The initiative, he said, aimed at bringing security closer to residents and tackle the rising issues of kidnappings and other crimes.
The director disclosed that each police station will include officers’ quarters, consisting of six two-bedroom flats, to accommodate personnel.
Gwary explained that the stations will serve as a moral booster for FCT residents, particularly those in rural areas. This, he noted, aligns with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike’s vision to restore confidence in the security system.
“Currently, 11 out of the 12 police stations have reached over 90% structural completion, with one yet to commence. Fitting works are also progressing, with many stations having virtually completed this phase. Overall, the projects are over 90% complete,” Gwary said.
Some of the police station construction sites visited included Bako and Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council, Yaba in Abaji Area Council, Ushafa in Bwari Area Council, and Saburi and Takushara in Abuja Municipal Area Council.
One of the contractors at the Saburi site, Ahmed Yahaya, promised to deliver the project within the time frame.
