Twelve suspected sex workers have been arrested and arraigned for allegedly soliciting for customers inside the MKO Abiola stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.

This followed a clampdown on non-sporting activities around the complex by the Ogun State government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Barr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, has said.

He listed the non-sporting activities to include hard drugs trafficking and hawking of sex by teenage girls.

The SSG told shop operators in the complex that the decision followed reports from stakeholders, including police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies in the state, over the increasing activities of commercial sex workers and drug trafficking within the stadium.

At the meeting were an assistant commissioner of police in-charge of operations, Okon Okon, and representatives of the Department of State Services.

Adeoluwa announced the suspension of all non-sporting activities in the stadium “to bring sanity to the complex.”

The sex workers, aged between 18 and 32 years, were arraigned before an Abeokuta Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for allegedly turning the sporting complex into a brothel.

All the accused persons pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Inspector Moshood Ahmed, said the accused persons had on September 7 at MKO Abiola Stadium unlawfully occupied the premises for the purpose of brothel or for habitual prostitution.

The prosecutor listed the accused to include: Akinola Temitope, 25; Salako Toyin, 32; Sanni Omolara, 24; Badmus Tife, 20; Olanrewaju Bose, 23; Adegbite Olayinka, 21; Eniola‎ Morenikeji, 22; Gbolahan Ayomide, 18; Abdullahi Mariam, 24; Durojaiye Funke, 23; Popoola Joy, 22 and Adetunji Bola, 24.

The magistrate, Mr Martins Akinyemi, granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

He adjourned the case till October 10 for hearing.
