A road accident in the early hours of Friday claimed the lives of 12 people at Samawa Village in Garun Malam Local Government Area of Kano State.
The lone crash, which occurred around 2:40am along the Zaria–Kano highway, involved a DAF Trailer (CF95 model) with registration number KMC 931 ZE, carrying goods and passengers.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano Sector Command, a preliminary investigation indicated that the accident was caused by a mechanical fault in the trailer.
Nineteen people were involved in the crash: 12 died, five sustained injuries, while two escaped unhurt. The injured victims were taken to Kura General Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Nassarawa Hospital.
Kano Sector Commander, M.B Bature, who visited the scene, lamented the avoidable loss of lives, attributing it to overloading and poor adherence to traffic regulations.
He warned that the FRSC would intensify enforcement against the dangerous practice of carrying goods, animals, and passengers together in the same vehicle.
On behalf of the Corps Marshal, Dauda Ali Biu, the Sector Commander condoled with the bereaved families and wished the injured speedy recovery.
