Twelve teams have begun the race for the highly coveted title at the maiden Nathaniel Idowu U-14 football league in Ajegunle, Lagos.

The opening matches played over the weekend saw thrilling displays among the teams, producing 21 goals.

Fortune FC easily surpassed Divinely Blessed FC winning 5-0, while Strong Dove FC also impressed with a 5–1 victory against Best of Best FC.

Other results saw Michael May FC and Ajegunle United draw 1–1, Pure Talents FC defeated Coal City FC 2–0, Bright Future FC edged More Wins FC 2–1, and Sharp Talent FC beat Young 11 FC 2–0.

The league will run for 11 weeks and matches played on weekends, with the following cash prizes on offer: overall champions N500,000, N300,000 for runners-up N300,000, third place N200,000 while fourth, fifth and sixth placed teams would receive N75,000, and N50,000 respectively.

At the end of the regular fixtures, the top four teams would advance to a round-robin Super 4 to determine the overall champion.

The Director-General of the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Sports Council, McAnthony Anaelechukwu, expressed confidence that the league would discover the next generation of stars in the mould of Nwankwo Kanu, Jay-Jay Okocha, and Odion Ighalo.
