On Tuesday, the National Judicial Council (NJC) announced the appointment of Justice Suleiman Galadima as the new chairman of the Corruption and Financial Crime Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO). He replaced Hon. Justice Ayo Salami (retired) who excused himself from the committee as the chairman.

For those who may not be familiar with this retired Justice of the Supreme Court, here are twelve things you should know about him:

 

1. Honourable Justice Galadima, who hails from Nasarawa State, was born on October 10, 1946.

 

2. He obtained a Higher School Certificate (HSC) from Government College, Keffi, in 1967 and had his bachelor’s degree in Law from Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria in 1977.

 

3. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1978. Thereafter, he proceeded to the University of Jos from 1985–1987, where he obtained his LLM degree.

 

4. He joined the Anambra State Judiciary as Magistrate on July 1988 and in March 1990, he was appointed as Attorney General and the Commissioner for Justice, Plateau state.

 

5. At the creation of Nasarawa State in 1996, he was appointed as the first Chief Judge of the State.

 

6. On December 9, 1998, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal (Port Harcourt Division), and on August 2010, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

 

7. On Monday October 10, 2016, Justice Galadima bowed out from the bench at the Supreme Court, having attained the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.

 

8. Justice Galadima is famous for his leading judgement in Shina Oketaolegun Vs. State, SC. 334A/2012, wherein he held that the Court of Appeal correctly reviewed the evidence led by both the prosecution and the defence in which he agreed that the evidence of one credible witness can justify conviction.

 

9. He was a member of the panel that heard the appeal filed by Dr. Bukola Saraki challenging the jurisdiction and competence of the charges by the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged false asset declaration.

 

10. He once received national awards such as Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) and Officer of the Order of Federal Republic (OFR) in 2011.

 

11. His hobbies include reading, photography, swimming, hunting, farming, gardening, current affairs, cultural activities, reading of Islamic scriptures and documentary.

 

12. As a devoted Muslim, who demonstrated the fear of Allah in dispensing justice, he is married and blessed with children.
