The 12th edition of Canada Education Fair in Nigeria has opened in Abuja with 40 Canadian institutions exhibiting their expertise and programmes to prospective Nigerian students.
The fair was to increase awareness among students and their parents about the wide range of academic, professional and technical programmes Canadian institutions offered.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Perry John Calderwood, disclosed that Nigeria represents the 8th largest source of foreign students in Canada, with over 8,600 students studying in various institutions in the country.
Calderwood therefore reiterated the High Commission’s commitment to increased educational partnership with Nigeria in the areas of joint research projects, curriculum development and vocational training.
He added that the High Commission Service would work with the Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) to host a seminar on possible partnership in technical and vocational education.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan, stressed the importance of acquiring technical and vocational education to build a skilled manpower for economic growth.
Represented by Mrs. Justina Ibe, Director, Education Support Services, Yemi-Esan said, “Technical and vocational education contribute to achieving sustainable development, poverty alleviation and greater equity and justice.”
