No fewer than 132 physically challenged persons have been trained on shoes, bags and liquid soap making to earn a living and stop street begging in Kano State.

This is coming just as the state government commenced the arrest and evacuation of street beggars and hawkers from the metropolis.

The training, which was sponsored by Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi and organised by Fasaha English Centre, brought together men and women living with different disabilities who were trained on the various entrepreneurial skills for three months.

During the graduation ceremony at the office of the physically challenged persons at Kabuga in Kano, the beneficiaries of shoe and bag making got N10,000 each while beneficiaries of liquid soap and perfume making got N5,000 each to serve as start-up capitals.

Speaking at the event, Alhaji Gali Mu’azu, who represented the sponsor, said the programme was organised to help the beneficiaries become self-reliant and stop street begging, and that it was part of the One To Tell Ten organisation’s efforts to assist humanity.

“The reason why we chose shoe, bag and liquid soap making is because they are part of what we are using on a daily basis. People are wearing shoes every day likewise bags and also liquid soap,” he said.

The chairman of the physically challenged persons in Kano, Yahaya Yahaya thanked the sponsor for the kind gesture and said with this kind of support they would no longer embark on street begging.

He said 44 out of the beneficiaries were men trained on bag and shoemaking while 88 females were trained on liquid soap and perfume making.

“Three people were selected from each of the 44 LGs of the state, one male and two female to make the list of 132. After the training, they were issued certificates and start-up capital,” he added.
