The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 134 suspects for drug related offences in Bayelsa and Edo states.

The state command spokesman, Osakwe Ikenna, said of the total number of suspects arrested, 68 were males and 21 females. He added that from the statistics of drugs seized, cannabis sativa accounted for the highest with a total weight of 62.093kg out of the total 73.779kg drugs seized in the first quarter of the year.

He also quoted the State Commander of the NDLEA, Abudullahi Abdul, as advising the public about the new dimension of drug abuse prevalent in the state, which he said was in the form of a liquid concoction consisting of Indian hemp, tramadol, codeine, rohyphonol and local gin which goes by several names in the streets of Yenagoa and other communities in the state.

According to him, the mixture is highly intoxicating, addictive and potentially lethal as it has been known to cause psychosis and even instant death.

Also, the state NDLEA commander, Buba Wakawa, said 45 suspects were arrested in the state while the command also seized drugs weighing 13,541.95kg. 

Abdul said 12 cannabis farms were destroyed, adding that the command also impounded four vehicles and a motorcycle used in conveying illicit drugs.

He said seven traffickers were sentenced to four and three months’ imprisonment respectively within the first quarter of the year.
