The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said a total of 147 persons lost their lives in separate road crashes in Gombe and Edo states between January and June 2025.
In Gombe State, the FRSC Sector Commander, Mr. Samson Kaura, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday that 72 deaths were recorded in 171 road crashes involving 1,156 people within the six months.
Kaura said 641 people sustained various degrees of injuries while 443 escaped unhurt.
He said this translated to a fatality rate of 6.23 per cent, with 55.45 per cent injured and 38.32 per cent unharmed.

“A total of 234 vehicles were involved, with 105 being bicycles and tricycles, representing 44.87 per cent of the vehicles. Monthly breakdown shows 18 deaths in January, 12 in February, five in March, 16 in April, five in May, and 16 in June,” he said.
Kaura attributed the crashes to overspeeding, dangerous driving, route violations, and overloading, among other causes.
He criticised the poor driving habits of motorists in the state and urged drivers to always check their vehicles before hitting the road, especially during the rainy season when roads are slippery.
Similarly, in Edo State, the FRSC sector commander, Cyril Mathew, said 75 people were killed in 101 crashes that occurred in the state during the same period.
A total of 903 people were involved, with 304 sustaining injuries.
Mathew gave the monthly death toll as 15 in January, 18 in February, 14 in March, four in April, five in May, and 19 in June.
He identified brake failure, overspeeding, dangerous driving, phone use while driving, and route violations as the leading causes of the crashes.
He said the command had intensified road safety campaigns across Edo to promote a culture of safe driving and ensure the protection of passengers and pedestrians alike.
Mathew also warned against drunk driving, night travel, overloading, and the use of mobile phones while on the road.
