Speaking Friday at a press briefing in Abuja,   Chief Duke noted that if AFAC is properly supported and developed, it could be a catalyst that will not only drive the economic diversification policy but also contribute to fast tracking the growth of the country’s economy.

“In addition to the number of states participating, 15 countries have indicated their interest to participate. They are:  Cameroon  Namibia, Senegal, Ghana, Gambia, Niger, Mali, Republic of Benin, Togo, Guinea Conakry, Cote’Ivoire, Pakistan, South Korea, China  and of course Nigeria, the host country is expecting participants from the states of the federation and  the FCT, the Local Government Areas, the Women and Youth groups, NGOs and other relevant stakeholders,” he said.

He said that the 5th edition of AFAC is intended to build upon the successes of previous ones towards coming up with an exhibition better showcase elements of good product design, finishing, packaging and presentation aimed at global market standards.

Chief Duke added that the crafts expo will help put in use untapped cultural resources of our country, which are critical and fundamental elements for sustainable economic growth and rural transformation.

“Furthermore, the hosting of AFAC is one way of demonstrating Nigeria`s leadership role in the process of realizing the goals of the New Partnership for African  Development (NEPAD) as well as the  African Growth and  Opportunities Act (AGOA) by creating a vibrant market place in Nigeria that serve the cultural industries of the entire African continent,” he said.

Earlier, the Executive Director of National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), the organisers of the expo, said that preparation is ongoing for a successful and improved 5th edition of   AFAC.

The 14- day expo will be officially declared open on the 7th of June by Nigerian First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan at Eagle Square Abuja. The theme for this year’s expo will be “Promoting crafts industry for economic transformation”
