150 golfers storm Ibadan for Oluyole amateur tourney
The stage is set for the 4th edition of the Oluyole Amateur Open Golf Tournament 2025, scheduled to tee off from August 22 to August 24, at the Ibadan Golf Club (IGC) in partnership with the Oyo State Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Addressing the media in Ibadan, IGC Captain, Seyi Alaba, revealed that the tournament would welcome no fewer than 150 golfers from across Nigeria and beyond, turning the city into a hub of sport and tourism for the duration of the event.
Alaba highlighted the significance of the tournament to the local economy, saying “The tournament has become the club’s annual sporting event with huge potential for sports tourism development and as a catalyst for local economies’ growth.”
Beyond its sporting appeal, the tournament is set to deliver entertainment, wellness, and economic impact.
“It will bring more revenue to the state coffers and also promote the hospitality sector of the state.”
In a bid to demystify the game of golf, often seen as elitist, Alaba noted the club’s efforts to engage the youth.
“We have embarked on several initiatives to encourage youths to take interest in the game, thereby changing the narrative that golf is only for the rich, retirees and the older generation.”
He praised the tournament convener, Mr. Folarin Laosun, for adding a cultural dimension to the competition.
“This is in line with the ‘Oluyole’ identity which the tournament carries. Golf is one of the ways to sell our tourism; hence, Ibadan Golf Club remains the home of golf and its traditions in Nigeria. This tournament will go a long way to boost tourism in Ibadan.”
Speaking on the broader goals of the event, Laosun described it as a platform for emerging talents.
“The tournament, being an amateur open, creates room for players to learn and encourages them to take professional courses. It’s the primary platform for identifying and nurturing promising talents in golf.”
The tournament is free to register and open for spectators, offering a blend of sport, culture, and leisure.
In an exciting twist, the overall winner will drive home a brand-new SUV, courtesy of Carloha Chery Nigeria, with additional consolation prizes for other category winners.
