About 1,500 small holder farmers in Kaduna, Kano, Katsina and Zamfara states have been trained on good soybean production practice with a view to increasing production capacity in the country.
Daily Trust gathered that the DFID-funded Propcom Mai-karfi project partnered with ABJ Oil Nigeria Limited during the 2014 wet season to build the capacities of soybean farmers to adopt good agricultural practices.
The initiative was also aimed at establishing strong linkages between farmer groups and ABJ in the four states and to facilitate farmers’ access to quality farm inputs to ensure that they produce quality grains.
Speaking at Agric Field Day, organised by Propcom Mai-karfi project and ABJ Oil Nigeria Limited held in Saminaka, Kaduna State, recently, for 500 farmers, Regional Coordinator, Propcom Mai-karfi, Abdullahi Umar, said that the training was aimed at broadening the horizon of soybean farmers.
Abdul-Bashir Babangida Jarbaba, the chief executive officer, ABJ Oil Nigeria Limited, lamented that Abuja currently has a production capacity of 500MT/day for soybeans but it was only able to source an average of 200MT.
Dr. Hassan Adamu Hamidu, a lecturer from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU)ý Zaria, while presenting his lecture titled: “Growing Good Soybean for Optimum Returns,” said Soybean, as a crop, has economic and nutritional importance.
