16 months on, police arrest confessed killer of Oyo lawmaker

Police in Oyo have arrested the killer of a state lawmaker Gideon Aremu, 16 years after he was killed.

The slain lawmaker represented Oorelope constituency under the platform of Labor party before he was murdered in his Alakia residence on July 1, 2016 .

The man, who confessed to have pulled the trigger, Kola Arobiole ( 30) was among the 22 criminal suspects arrested for various criminal offences ranging from armed robbery, ritual, cultism , theft, and burglary.

The self-confessed killer narrated how the lawmaker was shot after attempting  to raise alarm during the robbery attack.

He said " We never planned to kill him. After we searched and there was no good money found on him, we took his phone . And as we are about to leave , he sighted one of us who is known to him , he grabbed him and started shouting . This made us to feel uncomfortable , so I was asked to shoot him to prevent the people from tracing us . He did not cooperate with us."

The Police Commissioner, Mr Abiodun Odude at a press  briefing yesterday said the runaway killer of Hon. Gideon Aremu was arrested in another robbery act in Ibadan after returning from Ekiti where he hid  after killing the lawmaker last year.

"A runaway member of the armed robber gang which robbed and gruesomely murdered Hon. Gideon Aremu, member of the Oyo state House of Assembly representing Oorelope constituency in his Alakia Ibadan residence on July 1,2016 has been arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Command .

"The suspect who has been on the wanted list of the police Command escaped to Ekiti state , his country home shortly after the dastardly act .

"However, nemesis caught up with the notorious armed robbery suspect when he was arrested in his criminal hideout at Aisegba area, Ekiti after sneaking into the state and led another armed robbery gang to snatch a motorcycle from its owner at Egbeda area of the state ", the state Commissioner of Police told journalists at the Eleyele , Ibadan Police headquarters.

The 30-year-old robbery suspect was arrested with two other members of his gang – Taofeek Bashiru (28) and Suleiman Oladiti (27) while operating on a motorcycle to rob two other victims of the valuable property including cash.

They were said to have snatched at gun point a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration number AYJ 038 QM .
