At least 1,600 youths and women are qualified for the agribusiness empowerment programme  in Kano State, according to Agro-Processing Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS).

The  beneficiaries of the  programme, which is being powered by the World Bank, Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kano State Government, will receive N2.5 million each to enhance their businesses.

Disclosing this during the presentation of certificates to the first batch of 300 beneficiaries  who have gone for a two-week training at the Centre for Dry Land Agriculture, Bayero University, Kano (BUK), the coordinator of the APPEALS project in Kano, Alhaji Hassan Ibrahim, said the  remaining 300 would commence training next week.

“The aim of the training is to enable the beneficiaries learn how to manage the fund and facilities to be given to them for empowerment. It is also to provide the potential entrepreneurs with the necessary skills in their chosen fields through the value chains for self-reliance and economic development of the state,” he said.

According to him, out of the 1,600 beneficiaries, another 400 have gone through similar training at Audu Bako  College of Agriculture, Dambatta, while other 600 would complete their training at the Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil on January 1, 2020.

In his remarks, the managing director of the Kano State Agricultural Development Agency (KNARDA), Alhaji Ibrahim Suleiman, said the state had the highest number of unemployment; therefore, the empowerment programme is a welcome development.
