17 titles at stake as 43rd Asoju Oba T/Tennis holds

Addressing the press last Friday, sponsor of the competition, Chief Molade Okoya-Thomas, disclosed that 17 titles will be competed for in the junior, intermediate and senior categories.

He stated that “there will be competition too for coaches, veterans and sports administrators as well as sports journalists”.

Chief Okoya-Thomas pointed out that the standard of sports in the country has been on the decline saying that developing sports from the grassroots would address the downward trend.

“I consider it as my responsibility to play my part in the development of sports in Nigeria,” he said adding that “when I heard of players who have passed through the Asoju Oba championship become stars, coaches and administrators, I feel motivated to do even more”.

Also speaking at the press briefing, Lagos State commissioner for Sports, Barrister Wahid Enitan Oshodi, lauded Chief Okoya-Thomas for his invaluable contribution to sports development in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

Oshodi said “the Lagos State government appreciates Chief Okoya-Thomas for sponsoring Asoju Oba championship for 43 years. “It’s a thing of joy that some of the products of this competition have represented Nigeria at one time or another in many international championships” he said

This year’s Asoju Oba championship is scheduled to end on December 9.
