17-year old, Gyang James, who recently graduated from Victory Academy High School Jos, stunned many with extraordinary performance at the just concluded Yenagoa City International 10 Kilometer Marathon as he finished second to take home a whopping $3,000 cash prize.

While Ethiopia’s Habtamu Birhane Molla, made history by winning the inaugural edition when he crossed the finish line in a time of 29:23 minute to pluck the star prize of $5,000, the young prodigy followed closely with a time of 29:59 minutes, just as another Nigerian, Francis James, finished third with a time of 30:16 minutes to take home $2,000.

In the women’s category, it was a clean sweep for Ethiopian athletes, namely, Shewaye Tolosa, Tigist Girma Arseta and Worke Gacasho Jilo, who carted the first, second and third prizes.

A Nigerian, Daylop Patience took fourth place just as her compatriot, Vivian Nenyitwe Obadiaha, finished in fifth position.

Meanwhile, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State said his administration will continue to invest in sports development to give youths the opportunity to actualize their potential.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, he highlighted the immense benefits of sports and fitness which according to him helps citizens to stay healthy.

Governor Diri maintained that his administration will continue to accord priority to sports as it provides a career path for sports men and women for global reckoning.
