Katsina State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed into law the Child Protection Bill, 17 years after its presentation before the house.
In session chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki, members of the state assembly unanimously passed the bill.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the passage of the bill, the chairman of the committee, Hon. Musa Nuhu Gafia, said the bill was before the Honourable House since 2003.
“Because of the misconceptions and misperceptions attached to the Child Rights Act, the House could not domesticate it here.
“That is why we had to make wide consultations to be able to address all those concerns raised by different segments of our society,” he said.
He added that the passage of the bill portends a bright future for Katsina children as issues concerning child’s rights and child abuse were adequately taken care of in the bill including appropriate punishments.
The bill will be forwarded to Governor Aminu Bello Masari for his assent.
