The House of Representatives at the plenary Wednesday, passed through second reading a Bill seeking to amend the Constitution to Transfer Federal Roads other than Trunk A roads to concurrent legislative list and to allow state government and private sectors more power to fund roads rehabilitation and reconstruction.
The proposed legislation sponsored by member representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency, Imo State, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere was presented for second reading by the House leader Hon. Julius Ihonvbere.
According to the bill sponsor, when it becomes law it will accelerate development.
The bills draft states, “The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as; amended) (herein referred to as the “Principal Act”) is further amended as ‘ set out in this Bill; . Second Schedule Part 2 is amended as follows: By insertinga 4 new paragraph 32, to read as follows: “A House of Assembly may make laws with respect to the construction and maintenance of roads other than trunk A federal roads.”
When put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu who presided over the session, it was supported by the lawmakers and passed.
