Speaking at the opening ceremony, FCT Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mrs. Olvadi Bema Madayi, said the training, which seeks to empower them on poultry and fish farming will help the women take huge opportunities in the poultry and fishery industries to economically sustain and generate incomes for their livelihoods.
Mrs Madayi noted that Nigeria requires about 2.66 million metric tonnes of fish annually to satisfy local consumption, adding that “the total aggregate production from all sources is less than 0.7 million metric tonnes per annum.”
She said the FCT has established Fish Farm Estate in Bwari area council which has the capacity to produce over 20,000 metric tonnes of fish annually. The FCT has also established fish laboratory at Kado to ensure wholesome fish distribution and consumption in the territory.
The director of Destined Women and Child Foundation, Jiwa, Abuja, Mrs. Osigwe C. Stella whose women are selected for the training, thanked the Federal Ministry of Agriculture for the programme.
Mrs Stella appealed to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to hasten the provision of starter pack that would follow the training session to enable the trained women make good use of the opportunity.
“We appealed to Federal Ministry of Agriculture to come to our aid at the skill acquisition centre in Tatagiya village for rehabilitation of the farm because the recent storm that took place affected the farmers so much that we lost almost all the chicken in the farm,” she also urged.
The training which began on Monday at Government Secondary School Gwarimpa Abuja ends tomorrow (Friday).
