No fewer than 1,895 smallholder women farmers are targeted to benefit from an income improvement scheme through supporting climate-resilient and sustainable agricultural practices under Propcom Plus, a Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) project.
The initiative is aimed at climate-resilient and agricultural market development that would support economic growth for smallholders and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in conflict- and climate-affected regions in Nigeria.
This was disclosed by Propcom Plus Deputy Team Leader, Operation, Mr Egere Kemakolam, during the commissioning of Halilco foods instant Koko production line in Kano.
According to him, out of 3.79 million small holder farmers and small scale entrepreneurs earmarked for improved income under the project, 50% would be women.
He explained that Halilco food has been a champion partner that has leveraged on the grant made available by Propcom to expand their production line, which they successfully did.
“Propcom had put in the public domain a grant, which Halilco saw and took advantage of by partnering with us, and here we are today commissioning a new line of product in the company; that is why I always term them as champions,” he said.
In his address, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Halilco foods, Mr Abbas Fadallah, revealed that under the projects, the company trained, empowered and worked with 500 women last year adding, that it is planning to increase the number to 1,000 this year.
Similarly, Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture Dr Danjuma Mahmoud revealed that the state government is ready to support the project in all its ramifications, represented by Yahuza Shehu, the commissioner urged other private sector investors to leverage the opportunities Propcom is providing for a better economic development through the agricultural sector.
