18th NSF: Gombe ready to host zonal elimination

Disclosing this to Feverpitch yesterday, the Executive Chairman of Commission, Alhaji Farouk Yarman said the mini-sports festival which is going to feature five team sports namely handball, basketball, volleyball, hockey and table tennis has been slated for 17th to 22nd September.

He said with the support of the sports loving governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo, every necessary arrangements have been completed for a successful competition.

Yarma said all the relevant committees like medical, publicity, technical, accommodation and security have been constituted and are working to ensure a hitch-free games.

He said over 1,000 athletes are being expected and for the first time the state athletes and those from Taraba and Bauchi States would be accommodated.

Yarma in addition said his commission is not only planning to host the competition but also aiming to qualify to represent the zone at the national sports festival in all the team events.

He said although his commission met no structures on ground, it is working assiduously to revive sports in the state in line with the directive given by the governor.

“I can confidently tell you that Gombe State is ready to host the zonal elimination for the forth-coming 18th National Sports festival in five team events. Our amiable governor has approved funds for us to host the event and we have concluded all necessary arrangement.

For the first time we are going to provide accommodation for all the participating teams and their officials. We have on ground all the important committees to ensure hitch-free games.

Yarma, therefore, thanked Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo for his unwavering support to the sports commission and promised to reciprocate the gesture with resounding success at the 18th National Sports Festival in Lagos.

“We are enjoying the support of our sports loving governor who has never turned down any of our requests. Although we had to start from the scratch when this commission was created, we have been able to make significant progress. We have fashioned out a blueprint for sports regeneration and it will soon be handed over to the governor”, he said.
