About 19 academics comprising eight professors and 11 interns from 10 Nigerian universities have commenced their research and internship under the sabbatical and internship programme of Shell Petroleum Development Company Nigeria Limited (SPDC).

A statement from the company said the researchers commenced their programmes in January 2017 and would continue for one year while seeking to build industry knowledge in fields that include biodiversity, petroleum engineering, geophysics, impact assessment, community health, and oil and gas exploration.

SPDC, a Joint Venture introduced the research internship and attachment in 1980.

In his comments, the General Manager, External Relations, Igo Weli, said the programmes are key aspects of the company’s effort to contribute to the development of higher education in Nigeria.

“It is a mutually beneficial relationship. SPDC obtains specialised and cost-effective services from the professors and senior lecturers, while they in turn acquire industry experience and exposure to new technologies that can be ploughed back to the university community,” he noted.

The professors on sabbatical are expected to share their findings with SPDC for the period of one year. The Master’s degree students are also offered one-year placements to acquire work experience in SPDC,” the statement said.
